The 57th Arles photography festival was themed around the idea of reconstructed worlds – a fitting reference to the way photography re-presents and reshapes reality.
Familiar themes of identity, memory and representation dominate across both documentary and conceptual styles often intersecting in interesting ways.
With over 40 major exhibitions on offer Arles is a visual treat, although you will need both time and energy to take it all in.
This year’s personal highlights included Harry Gruyeart’s and Martine Barrat’s different styles of street documentary. Also, the large ‘Modele Animal’ exhibition explored representations of animals in photography over 200 years. Other notable highlights included the quirky ‘We are not alone’ exploration of UFO photography and Ghana’s ‘Dreaming Independence’ documentary project.
The well curated FNAC collection at the wonderful ‘Monoprix’ gallery space also deserves a special mention.
As usual, there were too many more to highlight here, however it’s worth mentioning that this year’s organisers provided a particularly thoughtful mix of established and less established artists – a diverse and stimulating experience.
It was a pity that the major William Klein retrospective was cancelled due to structural problems with the venue, but with more than 45 high quality exhibitions to choose from, no complaints here.
The organisation and quality of this world leading festival is superb and a great example of what is possible when both will and energy combine.
Arles was buzzing with photo lovers from all over the world and providing a suitable backdrop for the range of talks, walks, book events etc. on offer.
The walkable Roman town itself is characterful and friendly, the laid back ‘Provencal vibe’ certainly contributes to the experience.
Arles reputation as the the world’s leading photography festival is well deserved – give it a try, you will not regret.
