Having relocated to Bath in 2012, Paul wanted to develop his photographic style and approach. Inspired by the proportion, symmetry and balance of the city’s Georgian architecture, he embarked on a project to explore and gain a deeper understanding of the architectural heritage of his adopted home town through photography. At the same time, he wanted to incorporate people into his work, examining the dynamic relationship between Bath’s enduring architecture and the lives of those who live, work and socialise within it.
The project began in 2022, and in September 2023 an early version of the resulting photobook was submitted to the RPS. That version was awarded an Associate (ARPS) distinction. Having achieved the ARPS, Paul’s ambition had always been to further develop and self-publish that photobook to a wider audience. This culminated in the publication of The City of Bath – Enduring Structures and Transient Lives in autumn 2024.
More recently, Paul has turned his attention to London’s urban landscape, where he is developing his next photobook project.
Working primarily in black and white, Paul is drawn to photography that combines strong composition with a human presence. His influences include Robert Frank, Vivian Maier, Harry Gruyaert, Thomas Vanoost and Alan Schaller.
